The composition hints at the fact they have a hidden esoteric meaning that is more precious than the exoteric one.

P: the silver's a bit hard to make out... perhaps a colored background would help?

Don't be silly, this is done on paper, the background color doesn't change with one click! Also it's not hard to make out in the real thing. Metals just don't photograph well.
