Book of Grace by Majnouna Book of Grace by Majnouna
In the absence of a computer, I rediscovered the joys of bookbinding :)

Hardcover, 20 x 20 cm, glue-bound, 50 pages (90 g) with 4 spacing papers. Painted cover paper (it has a shimmery effect that may not be clear in the photo) with painted and varnished polymer clay ornament. For sale on Etsy: [link]

The name of the book comes from the ornament, which spells ???? ne3mat or "Grace" (as in divine grace) in Square Kufi of my composition. This is one of a series of words traditionally used as calligraphic motifs, redesigned everytime to fit a style or medium. Here I made the word form a rectangle which, duplicated with 3 lines of dots (some of which are to be read, others just ornamental), form a perfect square.
The design is such that the book can be used in the Western direction (cover on the left) or rotated and used in an Eastern direction (cover on the right).

It is by sheer synchronicity that I came up with and made this on Wednesday, just before the bomb exploded.

Oooh, I love the texture of the clay! It looks like fat, soft leather sewn to it or something. The spacers are great too, I love the paper and the orange paint.

That's actually an illusion – it's one large square of polymer clay, gridded to look like individual squares. Amazingly enough it's sold already, but I'm working on more in this style. It was $25 :)

but I don't think "grace" really fits me [grin] I am more about "A Diffrent Path"

This is so beautifully done! I learned some very basic bookbinding while in college, but nothing of this sort, just the very simple stitchery type. Thank you so much for explaining the significance of the design on your cover, as well. It makes the entire piece more memorable when you understand the symbolism and motivation behind it.

This is actually very simple binding (glue binding) but I lavished my attention of the cover :)
Glad you like it – I'm big on symbolism!

I love the cover! The text on it is beautiful. I had no idea what it meant (or even that it meant anything other than a bunch of colorful squares), so thanks so much for that wonderful description.

And I'm sorry to hear about the bomb :(

Even Arabic speakers wouldn't necessarily know what it means if they're not accustomed to reading this ancient frm of writing :)

What you said about the square text really fascinates me. I love languages, and the flexibility of scripts and alphabets...To my eyes, the design looks nothing like a word, and to know that it is, and is in fact part of a tradition of similar script...well that's just cool.

I don't know what it's like to live in the midst of war, or to have friends and family die. But I do think that it's a good thing that you are an artist in these times, in the middle of something so ugly; that you can make objects of beauty is a wonderful thing, I feel sure. Thank you again and always for sharing your art and stories with us and with me.

Oh good! I hope to finish some others soon, they should interest you too. Arabic has the wonderful ability to be breakable down to something so abstract as to be illegible to the uninitiate without being "incorrect", because as a script it works more by recognizing words than reading, if you see what I mean.

That's a nice book, it's not so common to see those techniques over here!, and I feel sorry for the Bomb...I've heard it through the international news, and yes, it was terrible.
I think that war is pointless nowadays!!, why do they have to destroy everything?!

Literal bomb, or figurative bomb?!

This is beautifully done, J :) Now here is a craft of wonderment! Bookbinding is something that has always been in the back of my mind to try.

Do you have any suggestions for good places to start learning the hows and whys of this art?

Literal. Several dead, friends or friends of friends. Very very sad :(
I do love bookbinding, it's very soothing and working with paper is such a pleasure. Besides you can choose the level of complexity to suit your materials and time.
This is a treasure trove of bookbinding links, tutorials and such: [link] . If like me thoughy ou find too much information at once daunting, I'd recommend Cover to Cover which I reviewed here: [link] I think it's a really good one to start with :)
