Yesterday night I attended a Sufi dhikr and sema3 at the Tripoli Festival, a beautiful ceremony of singing, music and the well-known whirling dance.

I'd seen one when I was much younger, and what I didn't know and only noticed now, was that the whirling is not "plain", but animated by a number of what I can best describe as "mudhras". There were more than I could make out, but I was fascinated by this – each of these gestures meaning something very specific.

It was my friend who made the (tongue-in-cheek?) suggestion I should make Mini Fu versions of the dancers... So here they are, in the 10 movements I was able to mentally note. Definitely the most random set I ever made and I'd be shocked if anyone actually used it :D

of course you know but people don't.. you may give some info i think. like,

While semazens whirl, they hold their right hands up and their left hands own in a stance that signifies Mevlana's own material insignificance and how he gave what he received from God directly to the people without arrogating it to himself.

Oops, you must have replied to yourself because it didn't reach me :)
I use Iconbuilder which is a great plugin from iconfactory.com, but it's not free. You might be able to try a demo though!

Is the thin, white border on the right and bottom there on purpose, or did you forgot to crop it?
It looks a bit distracting. ;P

Bizarrely enough, I've been reading the letters of Lady Mary Wortley Montague, and literally just left off at her description of 'dervises' – and next thing I know, this has popped into my inbox. =P Is that, or is that not a strange coincidence? o.O
These are very cute – I envy your ability to simplify things down so much. =)

That's REALLY bizarre, though this kind of thing has been happening to me with eerie frequency! Very interesting.
I love simplifying things down to their bare essence :giggle:

I know that but I thought the sect existed mainly in Turkey. Granted, I'm hardly an expect.

It's not a sect but a mystical school, and it exists in many places.
