Fajr فجر is the Dawn, the hopeful time after a long night when light returns, heralding the sunrise. It carries a symbolic value to all cultures, many of which personify it as a deity (to the Phoenicians it was the god Shahar, twin of the dusk Shalim). In Islam, of course, it is the name of a Sura and of the first prayer of day, before sunrise.

The dawn is a fitting concept to begin the year with, especially with the light returning after the solstice, but the idea came to me when, at a time of deep personal darkness, I started seeing the possibility of light sparking from it again. The root FJR also gave us the Arabic word infijar, "explosion", and that's how I envisioned it, a forceful and dynamic rebirth from the depths of gloom. For the creation process see [link]

Materials: Acrylic, watercolor, gilding
Paper: Bockingford 300gsm

i love seeing your creative process, especially because sometimes my naive eyes can't make out certain letters. i also love the ibis-like look of the units of this piece.

Magnificent! Will you be pursuing the "twin" dusk? I think it would make a very interesting diptych to have the pair of them. The ج is particularly creative, and the overall geometry is stunning.

It is very reminiscent of an explosive sunrise: one of those moments that really takes your breath away. Thanks for sharing

I think so, it had come to mind, but a look at the dictionary startled me. I have never seen or heard the word غسق before!

What word had you heard for dusk? I'm still building vocabulary, so chances are I've never heard any of them...

None, really, we just say sunset غياب الشمس
And I don't read Arabic literature so never encountered a specific term. But fajr I was familiar with, so it's odd dusk should be so left out.

Hm, it's an interesting term, غسق, does it have extrapolated meanings the way dawn does? It's not in my dictionary (which is, albeit, not a complete one), so I wonder what other derivations the root might have...
