Complete list of originals for sale, silkscreen and other prints in my Calligraphy Catalogue. Commission info here.

Nafs نفس means "self", but in philosophy and metaphysics it refers more specifically to the "little" self, psychologically termed the ego. In Sufism, Nafs is one of the Lata'if (its color being blue), but an "external" one, and as such often left out of the list that is more concerned with the 5 inner ones (see Qalb, Ruh, Sirr). In a mystical context, it is said that at the center of the illusion that is the ego, there is a void.

Materials: Ink, pens, gilding
Paper: Cotman 300gsm

Now let me see if I understand this... is the word repeated twice in each square? And if so, why did you choose to 8 squares with a blank in the middle when just one would've served the same "empty inside" concept? Would that have been too simple?
(Yes I really am clueless and these are all honest questions :D I hope it's not a faux pas to ask.)

I don't mind the questions at all! Yes the word is repeated twice to form each square. The reason I wanted to multiply it is that the ego is not a unified but a fragmented entity. We all have multiple personalities even if we take it for granted (wrongly) that we only have one "I".

Ah, I see! I definitely agree about the multiple personalities (I actually have my own complex definition of the ego). I'll ask more questions about your calligraphy in the future, I like how every detail seems to have a meaning :)
