For Japan by Majnouna For Japan by Majnouna
(Made slight edits)

I made this for Des images pour le Japon, an initiative collecting art that will be sold and collected into a book, the benefits of which will help tsunami victims in Japan.
Critiques, if any, are appreciated before I send them the final image... Thanks!

Everyone can participate. There's an English page here: [link]

I love this work. It's simple, it's symbolic, it's sad.
I would rather be glad you had not had to do it...

I love it and I hope that many people will buy it, so more help could get the victims of the region.

I love this, but I'd be lying if I said the red, white, and blue color scheme didn't disturb me a little ><

 Sorry, I don't mean to be. But since colors are often used symbolically, you should at least be aware that you're doing it.

No, that's just what you're projecting. For the rest of the world that combo of colors doesn't even mean America, since it's taken from the French flag. This is the Japanese flag with a traditional Japanese wave pattern, so please get your head out of that endoctrinated perspective.

Would it be exclusive? Or would be able to sell prints ourselves too?

This is a really good idea, I'll have to set aside a day to whip something up. Thanks for bringing this to my attention :)

There's no requirement for it to be exclusive, my understanding is the artists keep all rights. Personally I won't sell prints, I meant it to be exclusive, but you can do what you like :)

Thanks for the link Joumana.
I took a small part for a while in the CFSL community, I may give a try to a B&W piece for their project.
Nice piece of yours. I second Tariray's comment that the otaku-ness of many pieces in the project may somehow make them miss the target. Yours is totally devoid of that: very sincere, I feel. Probably because you know Japan first-hand.

Best wishes,

oh my its beautiful!

you know - i have - in my arrogance found that a lot of Japan disaster related art was somewhat trite. I felt ambivalent about a lot of it because i felt that the pervading otakuness and animoo-obessessed somehow cheapened the whole thing. Even if it was meant to mean well and was given out of genuine charity and love.
I do this is a touching piece of work and I think i may be given to be inspired to perhaps do a little something. THe only thing of critique that has been mentioned is the 'arms' of the sun, perhaps you could stylise them more to make them look more solid - the transparenty gradient doesnt really suit.
love it!!!

I think it's beautiful. The story it tells is clear, but because of the stylization I would also believe that it illustrated an old folktale or ancient legend. I don't know, it kind of feels timeless.

And thank you for the link. Since I can't read French is there anything else I should know about participating? I have a friend who lives 30 miles north of Tokyo and she isn't in the damage zone, but I still worry. She's an artist too and I'd love to create art to support her and her country.

Aww, it's hugging them :)

I'm looking at the image collection there and most of them are so depressing :/ Just a few of them convey hope. I don't know if that's a good thing. I always saw the Japanese as proud and stoic, I don't think they appreciate pity.

I don't get the feeling of pity from it so much as mourning. But yeah, a lot are really dark in outlook...

This is a beautiful image with lots of emotion.

The only critique I can think to give is that I think the arms should be completely transparent, so that there is a clear difference between the "arms" and the red circle (which I'm assuming is supposed to be from the Japanese flag). Also, the two figures in the very background are unnecessary, and kind of look like dead/drowning people.

They are dead/drowning people...
I'll try that with the arms and see how it looks!

Well, yes - but perhaps (in my opinion) that's a little too... I want to say "dark humour," but that's not really the right phrase.

But anyway, I took a look at some of the other pieces submitted, and yours doesn't seem out of place in comparison to everyone else's, so there you go. :-)
