Hmong spread 5 by Majnouna Hmong spread 5 by Majnouna
I'm back, and back to work! Here's another spread, though I need to re-shoot the spirit locks because their shadows are much too harsh. Ignore the question marks, all missing words have been supplied :)

Watercolour, gouache, ballpoint pen for the sketches, Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign. The silver neckring and spirit locks are from Laos.

This is wonderful work! I'd love to go into a culture and photograph the people and their traditional clothing then make a book detailing their textiles. Your work inspires me!

Fascinating, as ever! =)
I'd be interested to see something defining the size of those spirit locks. I think they must be a bit bigger than shown, but there's nothing to say how much. ;)

Actually they're actual size, and the neckring gives you the scale :)

Duuude awesome. Will you be doing this kind of thing for other cultures? Fashions and accessories for traditional garb? If so, are you also including them in some sort of book X3 Man, I'd buy all your stuff if they werent so expensive o__O XD One day when I'm rich, man. Your research is awesome, ever consider getting the books ';published' at kinkos, hardbound?

Yes indeed, I've already done it for the Zulu and I'm trying to upload that book for publishing, but it's taking forever :P It'll be available today or tomorrow though, I'll announce it. I was going to make them all into one book, but it takes so long it'd take me ten years – so I'm making individual books as I go. No need for kinkos, I use this: [link] The quality's fantastic... I don't do hardbound because that doubles the production cost, which I'm sure would not make my viewers happy.
My stuff ain't expensive, really... I've been buying art books in 3 countries the past 3 weeks, and I can tell you, I'm cheap for what I do! :D

That's true, for some reason I was thinking they were spiral bound going for 40-60, but maybe that was someone else. Eitherway, your tutorials are a great study and just what I've been looking for. I can't wait to see more of your cultural studies and traditional garb and maybe if I can ever get a job I'll buy them XD They're really worth it though, the information. Yeah, I've seen some expensive crap out there that's not even WORTH the cover price XD So its good to see that you provide honest information. Do you actually get to travel a lot for your studies?

Oh, that was back when I had to print them myself :) Thanks to Lulu I was able to bring the prices down. They are still spiral bound by popular demand: it makes it much easier to keep them open while working, otherwise it's a pain in the ass. Enjoy the cultural stuff, they're my favourite creations. I travel a lot, but on my own initiative... nobody commissions me for these!
