Hmong spread 7 by Majnouna Hmong spread 7 by Majnouna
Work in progress! I am still missing some terms (where the question marks are) and the vocabulary bar on the right is an early draft. I sent out notes asking for help with it, but additional hints are always welcome.

For those who don't know, this is a spread from a small book I am making about the Hmong people, focusing on dress and other cultural markers.

Before a Hmong watcher asks why I didn't include the qeej with the musical instruments: I'm reserving a whole page for it on the spread that comes right after this one in the book :D

The mouth harp pictured here is from Sapa in Viêt Nam, where the Black Hmong are concentrated.

My thanks go to ~Olithys for helping me with this one :)

Not sure if he got back to telling you what it meant, but just in case you were wondering, he said:

"This is great! Thank you so much for drawing this."

What would be helpful for me would be a few notes on pronunciation. Is that what the words in parentheses mean? What about tones?

Yes, the pronunciation of these is in parenthesis. An appendix is dedicated to pronunciation and tones.

My manager would have asked - What is that horizontal line below "(Black Hmong)"?
And we would have replied - Its an effect, not a defect.

Cool work... comme d'habitude.

Happy new year.

I like your reply! But I don't see why the line should be questioned in the first place.
Happy new year back!

Yes, you and me know that the question should not even be asked in the first place... but not the manager. ;)

that mouth harp is awesome looking.
how do couples use it to communicate privately?
i don't know how to use one, so i'm a little confused.

i like the vocab bar tho.

They can speak with it :D The Hmong language is monosyllabic and tonal, which makes it possible to speak using the sounds of certain instruments. In the case of the mouth harp, the boy would come sit outside the girl's bedroom wall and they would have a conversation using it – easier than trying to whisper through the wall, and more discreet.

VERY cool! :-)

BTW, is this shade of indigo you're talking about here similar to what the Tuareg make their tunics with?

Thank you!
The Black Hmong dye it even deeper, so that it looks quite black.
