I wanted to work on more calligraphy, and the word: شوق Shawq, or Longing, was suggested to me.
It turned out to be quite a challenge. It doesn't offer much to work with, and forces its dots upon you because it would be too easy to misread it as Souq (bazaar) without them. It called for a cursive solution, but my training is with the geometric Kufi, so I was leaning towards a geometric solution, particularly one I could arrange in a circle, which is my current shtick.
The final solution was a sudden click: by the end of the study I knew I wanted to open up the Qaf and gild the space inside to symbolize potential, but I had almost given up when the egg shape came to mind, a perfect expression of the pregnancy of Longing.
Then the 3-circle design fell into place, nicely mirrored by the dots on the ش, and the circular arrangement called for itself.
