Malaak II p4 by Majnouna Malaak II p4 by Majnouna
This took really long considering the small number of panels! But there was a lot of work to do on the back/foreground in panel 2, and on the picture, which originally showed workers beginning the restoration work...

Designing the insignia for the Brigade was a challenge. My priority was to steer clear from any symbol that could seem to hint at something used by an existing militia, and let me tell you there are/were LOADS of those. As usual, I thought hard for several days to no avail and the final idea came when I gave up thinking :P This, as I hope is obvious, shows an eye on a red shield – the eye for watchfulness, the shield for protection. Ironically (and that only occured to me later), the eye is a popular talisman against jinn.

I went to the Museum to sketch my backgrounds for this page . The National Museum has so much baggage I don't even want to get into it – it was something like the Berlin wall: get too close and you'll die. Militias encamped themselves in it, snipers, the works. I wanted that scene set there to give a glimpse of the inside, to which I have a personal emotional connection. You see, the large items in the collection could not be evacuated when the war broke out. The smaller ones were walled into the basement (the most precious taken to banks abroad), but the sarcophagi, mosaics and the rest were covered in concrete as they stood. They sat out the 15 years of conflict (and the few years of restoration) exactly as pictured above, before being brought back to light.

Wow! I'm hooked all over again. These new pages are so good. The new plotline is fantastic too. I'm glued to the page, waiting to see what happens next! Sorry I didn't comment on preceding pages, was catching up tonight on Deviations when I'd been real busy doing articles and not looking at my devWatch.

Very cool. using the photo for background is a novel concept. The small details are also very nice--the bullet holes on the wall, for example.

I love this story and I look forward to the next (and every time I find your commentaries a wonderful add - thanks)

I don't want to appear to be jumping on the bandwagon, but should you need a really creepy jinn design, I'd be honored to make one for you. This story is so good, I wait for every new page with excitement.

Oh I will definitely take you up on that offer!! I'm going to need one, and I may blend your design with mine for the final purpose, but I would be very interested in what you can come up with! Your original design would go up in the gallery though so it's not lost to posterity :D What do you think? You won't mind if it goes into a printed book in the end, and all I can offer is credit?

Bah... First thing I thought about when I saw it was "did Sauron take control of the museum?" But don't mind me, I'm way too geeky sometimes.
I usually think the use of photo backgrounds in drawings is a cheap shortcut, but as long as it helps with setting your comic in the "real world" locations(and it does) I approve of it :)

I actually think of the Museum back then as the gates of Mordor, so your'e not far off the mark :XD:

I love where you're going with this chapter, J. Design-element-wise, my favorite part is your inclusion of photography for added depth and realism to scenes; it works, and very effectively.

You know, I never thought this practice would get so much attention when I started – at first it was just to save time! But thanks to you guys' feedback, I'm now pushing it further and making it a trademark of the comic :D

It's funny how some of the best design decisions in retrospect start out for some completely different reason, isn't it?

Getting more and more interesting. Will there be a "Mission Improbable" segment coming up?
The "eye" symbol is an inspiration. I thought it was a Lebanese flag before I expanded the picture! And it ties in nicely with the jinns/evil eye atmosphere.
Oh, and the way they saved the stuff in the museum was amazing indeed...

No spoilers ;)
Hee, isn't it? It does look like the flag from a distance, and that wasn't intended, but that works out fine, you know? If it had been mistakable for something else.. that would have been a problem.
I can't get over it, I get goosebumps every time I watch the movie. I did visit it before they removed the concrete, it was eerie.

You're safe from political allusions, as long as it isn't orange, or yellow, or blue, or white, or green... dang. Stick with Lebanese flag colors.

The baath (nya2, tfoo) have black. Purple is still free, for the time being!

Purple is also a good color, come to think of it, being associated with the Phoenicians.
