Malaak IV cover by Majnouna Malaak IV cover by Majnouna
EDIT: Feedback implemented :)
EDIT2: and re-edited :P While posting on my blog about the work process I realized the original top color really made the whole thing look a lot more attractive, so I reverted to it. See the full progression on this blog post [link]

I'm in Dubai and I spent most of my stay working on this :XD: I had a very hard time deciding on the layout, then on what the characters should be doing, but I'm finally satisfied with it, intriguing (I hope) but without giving away too much. Now as usual I need your reactions and feedback, since the cover needs to be the best part of the book. The colors in particular have me uncertain but I need a fresh eye.

Going home today and off to Armenia on Tuesday! :faint:

I'm too tired to nitpick. :)

As far as I'm concerned, it looks gorgeous. I love the whole red/blue duality theme going on here, the lighting, hippocamp and winged serpent, the suggestion of past and present... And Barkshamash is all like, "Myyyyy precioussssss...."

I love the design. : )
It looks good!
I love your play with colours, your composition, and the symbolism of the red and blue figure.
Well done, leave it as it is. ;)

I really like the colours!
The only thing that really looks slightly off to me is Malaak's nose/mouth area... the nose-base seems to be too far too the right - or the mouth too far to the left...

I like the colors, them being classic opposites :) I also like the Pegasuses (that word doesn't sound like it's grammatically correct...) detail. They make a good touch.

I like the layout and the light. And I think that the two symbols of the spirits are really great. But ... are you sure about Malaak's nose beeing that big?

She's always had a longish nose, but I'll certainly double-check!

No critique - I love this cover! Have you tried giving Malaak a black top? It might increase the "stuff just got serious" look.

I haven't tried that but I was thinking I need to revise the top color. Black may be too dark but I will try something sober (and somber)...

Maybe the same dark blue as the bottom of the background?

I think the only problem is the area inside the animals looks like it doesn't "belong". I would give it the same grainy texture the rest of the background has.

I think you really had a lot of fun on this piece, and it shows...

If there was something you may want to take a second look at... I would direct you to the girl in front. Might be best to remove the black line indicating the tip of her nose in the lineart layer. It serves its purpose when the art is in black and white form... but now that you have all the colors in place, the shadows highlights and middle tones are doing the job of indicating the surfaces. A general rule of thumb is the less lines on a face, the better (especially on a girl's face... since each and every line, ages the face more and more.)

I like the texture you used on the blue background... maybe a similar one for the dark circle in the center? (It would eliminate the "banding" that occurs from the gradient colors used... or maybe just a flat color?)

Since you chose to go with both hot and cold colors in the piece, maybe utilizing One color and One font instead of three different ones for the text in the lower left? I find when I use too many colors in my own work, I get a "bowl of jelly beans" effect... and the eye does not have anywhere to rest for a bit. Less might be more, and should help to add harmony to that particular element, and won't detract from the figures in the piece.

Maybe putting a secondary (orange-ish) light source on the girl in front? ...so the glowing orange ball is casting its light on her as well, increasing its power, and bringing more unity to the two main figures on the piece.

I am especially liking the animal graphics. They are so well done, and is where you really shine. I really love their graphic nature-- looks like you had a real blast on them.

 Party On!! :D

Thanks a lot for this detailed feedback! It was seriously helpful.
- Nose line removed, and while I was at it I cleaned up some other lines on her face.
- Background adjusted and unified with the same texture
- The text formatting for the title was consistent across covers(except for the red that bothered you, which I was just trying out), but the amount of it and the different formatting/colors it required was bothering me too, so I streamlined it altogether. Consistency be damned, I don't have a publisher to justify myself to :XD: I can fix the other covers come reprinting time.
- I was torn for the last bit. The unifying is a good point, but I don't want to imply visually or conceptually that the two figures are sharing a space because they never could (having the orange ball cast light on her would have made it look that way). In the end, the red gradient is affecting them both; it's almost imperceptible but it does give her a reddish cast towards the top and it seems to do the trick :)

Thanks again
