Score! Love the explanation for so many things at last.
Reminds me a bit of Madeline L'Engle's A Swiftly Tilting Planet, where the bad guy tells the kid to shut up, and the kid is like "Don't you dare tell me to discard the one thing that makes me human! The ability to speak, to orate!"

I had to read this part twice because at first I thought Amer was really the bad guy and now that he has Malaak in the Jinn stronghold he can possess her.

Haha well, I don't think Amer is the bad guy, but I don't think he's necessarily a good guy either. I think he's a sort of rogue jinn, and we still don't know what he's up to. THAT is why I like him. I like unpredictable and "grey" characters more than obviously positive or negative ones.
