Ritual Devotional by Majnouna Ritual Devotional by Majnouna
Doi Suthep, Thailand: as a devotional custom, visitors to this major Buddhist shrine pour oil into the lamps.

Whereas I love the quality of the light and the play on focus, this picture's composition vexed me, as the hand/ladle in the middle cut it in two equal blocks. I only had little room to crop to change the proportions, so it's still disturbing. Can't get them all!

Beautiful shot. Very nice composition. I love the short depth of field, it still allows an impression of the surroundings, but still keeps the focus on the subject.

Beautiful picture.

I disagree about the composition though. Without the ladle, the lamps, wall, and temple roof would all be going to one "point de fuite" to the right, and with the ladle positioned as it is, it broke the imbalance, which is perfect.

Aside from this, great contrast and color tones.

That's a great point, but if the ladle had been a bit higher it would still work, no? :)
Thanks!

I really like this shot... nice lighting, great composition and dof... I do wonder how it would look in B&W though? May be interesting :D

*horrified scream* You have all these incredible golden and warm tones and you want the picture stripped of them? No, no, no. Black and white is more than just converting a coloured picture into B&W, and colour is colour for a reason.
Anyway, glad you like it! Merry Christmas :)

Your photos are always beautiful (much better than anything I ever take). I keep getting distracted by the hand, though. Is your focus the oil on the flame? Have you tried completely cropping out the hand?

Thank you! The hand is the main focus and then the gaze should follow the ladle to the lamp. Without it the picture would be a still life with much less pull or story.

I love the warmth of the colours. I imagine there was also a wonderful perfume in the shrine?

I can't say I noticed any wonderful perfume, save the rather harsh (but I like it anyway) scent of temple incense :)

The composition works for me, the eye moves straight to the laddle and the lamp.

Wooo, me and Lenka, while traveling through the temples of Chaing Mai reached one where is placed his figure made from (how do we call it, the thing that candles are made of?),
anyways, it looked so real! It was scaring, he was sitting and staring at anybody who aproches with realy harsh gaze! :D
