My dad had the opportunity to have balut, but the ducks were too far developed and there were actually feathers and a beak. Whoops...

Hahaha, this is really funny! The egg is a delicacy in my country as well and it's really delicious for me. It's definitely not for everyone though and it can look pretty disgusting so I guess your reaction was understandable XD

If I'd been warned, I might have reacted with less shock :XD: but I had never even conceived of eating eggs this way, so I was utterly confused and horrified to see a leg pop out of the egg!

LOL that's okay, I've seen many foreigners react that way to that egg ^_^. It's actually quite good though(well it's either that or our taste buds are just messed up XD)

Let me just take the chance to thank you for the great tutorials you've put up here in DA. You are both a great help and inspiration to other artists. :worship: I'd get your book if I could afford it :(

FFFFFFFFF I know that stuff. That creeps the shit out of me DDDD8 SO WRONG DO NOT WANT.

And yeah, they hold a light to it. That's a common practice, and usually required. Most often to find if there is blood in the egg before it ships :3 Though it takes something a bit more high powered than a flashlight though. a regular light bulb does it though.
I've done it before on a farm I went to summer camp as a kid. it's really interesting, but at the same time, really creep D:!

Doesn't seem any weirder than eating a whole fish to me - of course, that depends on whether it's still alive or not.

Of course, it doesn't beat the Century Egg (a Chinese Malay delicacy, where an egg is presevered for a 100 days. Smells delicious). Tentacles on a stick come close, though.

That still doesn't beat the Icelandic delicacy that consists in burying a shark for a few months, until "it's so putrid even seabirds won't touch it". Oh and they're fond of sheep eyes, too.

Ooh, I haven't heard of that one. You wonder how people come up with these...

I've eaten tongues, I'd be game to try eyes! Internal organs might be getting a bit close for comfort though.

I saw this (balut) on an episode of Monster Quest when they were in Southern Asia. Kinda freaked me out, but then I wonder what those people would think of american hot dogs, hehe.

Yes, which was a mixed blessing, because the egg was so hot the contents popped out the moment the shell was broken. I should probably stress that in the comic, lol.
