Story of Glass icons by Majnouna Story of Glass icons by Majnouna
To download the Mac and PC icons please refer to my :pointr:Downloads Page:pointl:, where you'll find all my icon sets, my terms of use and the licenses I offer.

The icons in this set were extracted from my illustrations for the 11th book in our [link](Lebanese Heritage) series, Verre et Verriers. The book covers the history of glass from the earliest we know of its invention to the rise of Venice as a centre of glassmaking, at which point our region (the Levant) ceases to be of significance in its development.

I had no idea I had drawn quite so much glass, but there you have it, 47 icons spanning, from top to bottom: Mesopotamia, Egypt, Phoenicia, Roman Phoenicia, Byzantium, various Islamic dynasties, and finally Venice. They were not created with an icon set in mind, so they are not as consistent as a set ought to be, but they're a nice accompaniment to the book (which I highly recommend an English version is in preparation). Enjoy!

Some spreads of the book can be viewed on dA:

Sorry, but I can't seem to be able to find the PC version (i.e. .ico) files within the zip for this.

I see that I removed them. The file was so absurdly large. Maybe I should put them back...

Sorry for the delay in replying. I for one would really like them to be available. I am a creator of custom content for the ancient computer game Neverwinter Nights, but have very little talent at actually drawing anything. Please may I have your permission to convert your icons into items usable within this game. You can view a list of all that I have made for it at the following address

[link]

and the type of thing that I would like use your icons for are my glass bottle item at

I should point out that I do not get paid for what I create, I do it merely to share with the nwn community.

I await your reply with anticipation.

I read in a history book that the colorful glass fish, was used by the rich egyptians to store their perfume, or was it eyeliner?:O The mouth was the bottle top, the pattern was the fishshells. Egyptians also thought having fish as an charm/amulet, could save you from drowning. :) Intresting. Do know what glass shaped as a compass was? Just a tiny curious. ;)

Either/or, though from the shape I would say eyeliner :)
The "compass" shaped object is a pendant with the Star of Ishtar :D

Where's the third icon in the third row from? Just asking because the shape is very similar to some traditional Romanian ceramics ( [link] ).

It's Phoenician, from Tyr, but based on the shape of the greek pottery called oenoche :)

Ah, Greece! It's amazing how enduring some "trends" are :D I never imagined this jug shape was so old, they were still being made and used here until the last century. They make them even now, but mostly "souvenir" kitsch versions ofc.

The things I learn on your page!

I'm not so surprised, convenient shapes never go out of fashion :D We still eat out of bowls, and they've been around since the stone age!

I aim to educate! :#1:

Very beautiful... Makes me want to know more about glass: the techniques must be fascinating! Not to mention knowing the names of these things allows me to seek out more gorgeous images.

Pity my French is so rusty.

This documentation is beautiful!
And I'm not exactly an expert on drawing techniques, but I've always thought that working with transparent/translucent textures musn't be easy. And in here they're just excellent.

It's not that hard, you just use a reduced opacity brush or a layer with less opacity :) But thanks!
