The past few weeks I've been getting down to business here... While I find ways to get into the local art scene, I'm looking for freelance work, preferably to do with calligraphy (the whole gamut of what can be done with it, not only originals but logos, covers, business cards, chapter headings, tattoo designs, and so on), but I'm also taking illustration, game and icon design jobs. If you're in London and can help with tips or recommendations, it would be much appreciated!
I'm loving my geometry course at the Prince's School and it's kicked me into getting back to work on a geometry tutorial. I have been taking my compass and straight edge to coffeeshops lately to practice some basics!! This in parallel with a whole bunch of things I seem to be working on at the moment... More books covers, calligraphy commissions, a new Lebanese Heritage book, a booklet about spices (derived from my recent poster), more recipes, and more icon set/MiniFu ideas than I can handle! By the way, I didn't expect the book covers to get so much attention, and I had some requests to make them available as prints, so
here they are. I'm hoping to finish 6 or 9 or these to make one nice, big poster.
I have some new accounts around the web:
Behance (spiffy and pro)
dribbble (quite fun)
Instagram (having WAY too much fun with this one – warning, lots of WIP and food pics)
Thanks for the support!
But does it pays the bills and provide you with good life - the one you want for yourself?
That question started to bother me recently of; how artists earn their living?
By the way, I tossed chemistry degree away and finally went to arts school. And now I'm happy. ^___________^
I think I understand, but I am a bit scared. I work slower than most of people, it takes me more time to form an idea and how to do it. And I am not sure I could work as much as you work or many other artists do.
Also I would like the sitting or walking in the nature to be part of my working process. I feel that, in that way I will not be sorry for missing the beautiful sunny days outside my home. I am still unsure how to do it.
For now I still work in chemical laboratory and the rest of the time I study, so the only spare time I have with the sun is on the weekends... And I'd like to meet my family and friends too...
Have any ideas?
Hey, why won't you write a brief article about your personal working processes? That could be really cool.
For now be grateful that you have a solid job alongside your studies (nobody I know had a life AT ALL while studying art!), and if I were you I would save as much as possible because times are going to get harder worldwide.
There's no real method to my working process, it changes with my mood and the project itself, so I wouldn't know what to say...
It took me 4 years to realize I could not do something I am not, and that even those who studied with me the same chemistry, or biology or math degree did not really know what they are going to do after they finished their studies.
I actually added this article to my favourites long time ago. But you are right, perhaps it's better to reread it once more.
Saving money is not possible, my salary is really low. I barely have enough to pay for the studies and fuel and food. Not much else is left... I even have some support from my parents for daily expanses...
Well I can understand it either. I too, work differently on different things. And I like the diversity.
